Description

The bank barn and adjoining range of farm buildings located immediately east of Bickham date from the early 19th century, with some additions made in the mid-19th century. Constructed from local slate and river stones, the first floor of the front is slate hung, and the roof is made of bitumen-coated scantle slate with half-hipped ends.

The building has a rectangular plan with a wing on the right, forming an L-shaped layout. The main section serves as a shippon with a hay loft above, featuring loading doors at the back that access a road at a higher level. The left end likely contains a granary above a stable, which is accessible via external stairs at the front. The right-hand end, added in the mid-19th century, includes a shippon wing that extends to the front and returns as a small cart shed with an open front facing the main range. Additionally, there is a lean-to cart shed from the mid-19th century at the left end of the main range.

On the south front, the first floor is slate hung, with steps leading up to a loading door on the left for the granary. To the left, there is a stable door flanked by windows, while to the right are shippon doors topped by a slated pentice roof supported by wooden cantilevers. The shippon wing on the right features four ground floor doorways with flat red brick arches and one hay loft door above. At right angles to this wing is a small cart shed with a hipped roof and an open front facing the main range. The back of the main range has three first-floor loading doors with canopies on wooden cantilevers; the left-hand doorway is part of the mid-19th century addition, and there are two small windows near ground level in the original range that light the shippon. The interior has not been inspected.
