Description

Rose Cottage is a small house, likely dating to the late 17th or early 18th century, situated in the parish of Strete Burlesdon. The exterior is constructed of painted local slate rubble, with a rendered south end wall and a rendered top to the north end wall, possibly over cob. The roof is thatched, with a half-hipped north end and a gabled south end. A slightly projecting rendered stack, featuring a short weathered slate cowling, is located on the south end.

The original plan comprised a single-room range with an unheated outshut extending along approximately two-thirds of the rear; the outshut was probably an integral part of the original design. The main range may have originally been divided into two rooms. The original entrance was probably centrally positioned on the west front, but the current doorway is now located at the north end of the rear (east) elevation. A small 20th-century outshut is situated on the left-hand (north) end of the west front.

The house is one storey with an attic. The west front was inaccessible during the survey. The rear (east) elevation includes a 20th-century top-hung window in the outshut, and a 20th-century glazed door with side lights to the right of the outshut. The north end, facing the road, has 20th-century metal framed casement windows on the ground floor and in the attic, with slate hanging to the corner. The south end has a rendered elevation, the stack, and no windows. Internally, later ceiling joists were noted during a survey in 1988, but the interior was otherwise inaccessible.
