Description

CORNWORTHY

1309/6/89 TUCKENHAY 26-APR-1993 Chimney about 130 metres south east of Tuckenhay Paper Mills

GV II Detached chimney of paper mills. Dated 1889, with initials H.S. Local stone. Double stack with grey Devon limestone quoins and red brick shaft. The stack is square on plan with slight batter. Corbelled base of red brick shaft which is also square on plan and has round-headed panel on each side with keystone and impost and a corbelled brick cornice. On the side there is a datestone in the head of the panel, much weathered but appears to bear date 1889 with initials H.S. On the north side at the base of the shaft the flue runs down the hillside to Tuckenhay paper mills qv. The flue runs underground and is built of stone rubble, apparently with a brick vault.

The chimney served the 1889 extension (Tuckenhay Paper Mills qv) to the earlier paper mill (Tuckenhay Mill qv) which is said to have begun work in 1829. It produced high quality hand-made paper and was the only surviving 'vat'-mill in Devon (Hoskins).
