Description
The chimney located about 130 metres southeast of Tuckenhay Paper Mills is a detached structure dating from 1889, marked with the initials H.S. It is constructed from local stone, featuring a double stack with grey Devon limestone quoins and a red brick shaft. The chimney has a square plan with a slight batter and a corbelled base made of red brick. The shaft also has a square plan and includes round-headed panels on each side, each with a keystone, impost, and a corbelled brick cornice. A weathered datestone at the top of one panel appears to indicate the date 1889 along with the initials H.S. On the north side, at the base of the shaft, there is a flue that runs down the hillside to the Tuckenhay paper mills. This flue is underground and constructed of stone rubble, with what seems to be a brick vault.
This chimney served the 1889 extension of Tuckenhay Paper Mills, which is an earlier paper mill that began operations in 1829. The mill was known for producing high-quality hand-made paper and is recognized as the only surviving 'vat'-mill in Devon, as noted by W. H. Hoskins.
