Description
The Church of the Holy Name is a Chapel of Ease built in 1873. It is constructed of snecked stone rubble, with the Sunday school section rendered, and features ashlar dressings. The building has a slate roof with gable ends, topped with crested ridge tiles and an apex cross at the east gable end. The church has a T-shaped layout, with the base of the T formed by the Sunday School extension, which is at right angles to the main chapel. This extension includes a rendered lateral stack enclosed in a lean-to roof at the entrance lobby in the west angle.
On the south side of the chapel, there is one single light window and three two-light windows, all featuring pointed arches and diamond leaded glass. The stepped three-light windows at each end include an east window with a pointed arch, stone voussoirs, and a chamfered surround. Inside, the chapel has three arch-braced trusses and a two-bay segmental pointed arched arcade, with plastered walls. The east window contains stained glass from 1924. The pulpit is notable for incorporating three reused late medieval carved panels, two of which have Gothic tracery, and one features figures of angels with outstretched arms inside a round arch, standing on a scalloped base. Additionally, there is a Victorian register grate in the Sunday School stack.
