Description
Quince Cottage and the attached cottage to the left are a pair of cottages, likely built in the early 18th century. They are constructed from rubble and cob, rendered and colour-washed, with axial stacks featuring brick shafts and a wheat straw-thatched roof with gable ends. The layout includes a direct entry into a hall with an axial stack to the right in each dwelling, and a small service room to the left. This configuration results in the right cottage having its stack on the gable end, while the left cottage has its stack in the center of the building. There is an outshut at the rear with a lean-to roof that was added in the 19th century.
The exterior is two storeys high with a 2:2 window arrangement, featuring casements with glazing bars, although the windows on the left are from the 20th century. The door openings are in added 20th-century gabled porches with 20th-century doors. Inside Quince Cottage, there is a hall with a chamfered and unstopped axial ceiling beam, and a fireplace with stone jambs and an unchamfered wooden bressumer, which has been altered in the late 20th century. The staircase to the first floor rises from the service room in a straight flight. The roof is completely ceiled in but is believed to date back to the early 18th century.
