Description

East Cheldon Barton is a farmhouse that has been converted into a holiday home. It likely dates back to the early 16th century, though there may be earlier elements hidden within the structure. The building underwent remodelling in the late 16th century and again in the 17th century, with further alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The exterior is made of rendered stone rubble and cob, topped with an asbestos slate roof that is half-hipped at the left end, hipped at the right end, and hipped at the rear wing. There is a rear lateral stone rubble hall stack that features a pronounced batter, along with a stone rubble stack that has a tapered cap and two bread oven projections at its right end. Additionally, there are two brick stacks serving the outer flue of the rear wing.

The original layout was likely a three-room and through-passage plan, with the lower end situated to the right. However, the partition on the lower side of the through-passage has been removed, and the front doorway has been blocked. It is believed that in the 18th century, a wing containing the principal staircase and a second parlour was added to the rear left end, resulting in an overall L-shaped plan. This addition includes a dairy/service outshut at the rear of the hall and lower end. Although the roof was not accessible during the survey, it is known to be of cruck construction and smoke-blackened. The change in floor levels indicates that floors may have been inserted in phases, with the hall possibly being ceiled as late as the mid-17th century. The lower end appears to have been largely remodelled in the 19th century and features a second staircase running up beside the rear wall.

The farmhouse is two storeys high and has a five-window range, all featuring 20th-century three-light casements. There is a 19th-century doorcase on the outer face of the rear wing, which includes a six-panelled door, panelled reveals, and a bracketed hood. Inside, the lower end has a stone arch instead of the more typical timber lintel, along with two bread ovens. The hall features a well-crafted 17th-century ceiling with two cross beams and bressumers at each end, both adorned with twin ovolo mouldings. The hall fireplace has an ovolo moulded lintel, and there is a stud partition between the hall and the inner room, which includes a well-made shoulder-headed doorway with a chamfered surround. The inner room contains a rough chamfered axial ceiling beam supported by a timber corbel and a jowled post. Although the roof was not inspected, it is known to be of high-quality late medieval construction.
