Description

This building is a water mill located approximately 20 metres north-west of Cawsey's Meethe Farmhouse. It is probably from the late 18th century, with the year 1796 carved on a beam, and was remodelled and extended in the early to mid 19th century. The mill is constructed of unrendered stone rubble and has a slate roof with gable ends.

The mill features two undershot water wheels, one on each side of the leat, and the main mill building straddles the leat, with storage and granary facilities in a single cell plan on either side. The original core of the mill appears to be the left-hand section, while the right side and the extension over the leat were added in the 19th century. The stone floor, which has provisions for one set of millstones, is located over the right-hand section, with a loft floor above the left side.

The exterior is largely covered in ivy, but there seem to be two shuttered windows on each floor and a plank door at the right end. There is a cambered arched lintel at the entrance to the leat, and a loft door is located above the plank door at the left gable end.

Inside, there are two undershot wheels; the earlier wheel, possibly from the late 18th century, is on the left and is made of timber, while the 19th-century wheel is on the right. Both wheels, along with the gearing and sluice arrangement, are largely intact, although the millstones have been removed. The hopper arrangement survives in the left-hand section, which has "IH 1796" carved on the cross ceiling beam.
