Description

Devon House is a house located on South Molton Street in Chulmleigh. It likely has a 17th-century core but was significantly remodeled and refronted in the 18th century. The facade is made of painted brick, while the rear features stone rubble, cob, and lath and plaster. The roof is thatched with a tall lateral stack at the rear that heats the right-hand room.

The house has a two-room plan with direct entry into the larger heated right-hand room. A passage that once led directly to the staircase has been removed. Although 19th and 20th-century alterations have obscured the original layout, a blocked doorway to the upper storey indicates that Devon House and the adjoining Fernside were once connected. The shared brick facade suggests they may have been under single ownership in the 18th century. It is possible that the original layout of both houses included a hall and parlour, each heated by rear lateral stacks.

The 18th-century remodeling likely included raising the building by adding a second storey and rebuilding the facade in brick. The exterior features three storeys with a two-window range. The upper two storeys retain early 19th-century fenestration, consisting of 16-paned hornless sash windows, with slightly cambered brick arches over the first-storey windows. A brick plat-band between the first two storeys extends from Fernside and ends abruptly under the right-hand window of Devon House. To the left of the modern door, there are twin 12-paned sashes, and to the right, a 20-paned sash window.
