Description

Higher Aylescott Farmhouse is a two-storey building from the early 18th century, possibly incorporating earlier elements. It has been extended to the rear, likely in the early 19th century, when the adjoining dairy and shippon may also have been added. The cart shed was constructed in the late 19th century. The farmhouse features a colour-washed rendered facade and is roofed with asbestos slates, while the gable end stacks are made of rubble stone with tapering caps. The dairy and shippon have a corrugated iron roof. The farmhouse has an L-shaped plan with an outshut that includes a lean-to slated roof. The front range has single rooms on each side of a cross-passage. The dairy and shippon are positioned at right angles to the right side of the farmhouse, extending southwards, while the cart shed is at right angles to the west side, creating a three-sided courtyard. The farmhouse has a two-window range of 19th-century four-light timber casements, with two panes per light above two three-light timber casements with three panes per light, flanking a projecting porch with a slated lean-to roof. Inside, there is a four-panelled inner door and a fireplace in the right-side room with a scrolled and chamfered lintel. One original roof truss remains. The dairy features a blocked doorway at the upper end and a two-paned casement, while the shippon has a single ventilation slit and a four-paned casement inserted in a larger blocked opening with a timber lintel. The dairy also has a flagstone floor and plastered internal walls.
