Description

Southwick Cottage is a house and adjoining cottage that was formerly known as the Rising Sun Inn until around 1870. It dates from the early 18th century and is constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with rubble stacks topped by 19th-century brick and a thatched roof. The building has a 4-room plan and faces south, featuring axial stacks—one located between the left (western) end room and the left of the center room, and the second serving the right (eastern) side of the center room.

The main entrance is positioned to the left of center, leading into a lobby, while there is a secondary door to the cottage at the right end. There are outshots at the rear of the building. It is two stories tall and has an overall front with four windows, which are late 19th-century horned 16-pane sashes, some of which contain original crown glass panes. The main door, located right of center, features 19th-century double 3-panelled doors and an 18th-century porch that is cob or rubble slate-roofed and gabled, with a round-headed outer arch that has a slight downward dimple at the apex. The secondary cottage door at the right end is sheltered by a 20th-century slate-roofed and gabled porch. The roof is hipped at both ends.

Inside, the cottage features 18th-century roughly finished crossbeams and rubble fireplaces with plain oak lintels. The roof is supported by 18th-century A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars and X-apexes that support the ridge. Some of the sashes are fitted with late 19th-century panelled shutters that fold into the internal reveals.
