Description

Studley's is a detached cottage, likely dating from the late 17th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of plastered random rubble, possibly with some cob, and has a gable end roof covered with corrugated iron, with some thatch visible underneath. The cottage originally comprised two rooms. The entrance is directly into the right-hand room, which is heated by an external end stack. The exterior features an irregular facade with a single-light window to the left-hand room and two later two-light windows to the right, with a 20th-century glazed door positioned between them. A rear extension was added in 1950. Internally, the left-hand room has chamfered cross beams with scroll stops, and the roof exhibits straight principals and trenched purlins. Studley's represents an intact example of a late 17th century small-holder’s, or potentially originally a squatter's, cottage situated in a remote location on the southern slopes of the Blackdown Hills.
