Description
Shoebrook's Cottage is a detached cottage, likely built in the late 17th century or early 18th century, with an extension added in 1828. The building is rendered and primarily constructed from random rubble with some cob, topped with a gable end slate roof. Originally, it was a two-room cottage, where the left-hand room served as an unheated entrance and passage, while the larger right-hand room was heated by an axial stack with a brick shaft, which was formerly positioned on end. The 1828 extension is located to the right of this main structure.
The cottage stands two storeys tall. On the front, there is one three-light 19th-century casement window on the first floor, along with a later casement window in the main room and a doorway to the left. The rear features a glazed extension and another three-light casement window on the first floor. Inside, there is an open fireplace still in use, with an unchamfered lintel. The main room has a ceiling cross beam that is chamfered with scroll stops. This cottage is a well-preserved example of a late 17th-century smallholder's cottage, possibly originally a squatter's cottage, situated in a remote area on the southern slopes of the Blackdown Hills.
