Description

This building is a barn and stables located approximately 3 meters west of Lower Chilverton. It dates from the 16th century, with alterations made in the 17th and 18th centuries. The structure is made of cob on rubble footings and has a corrugated iron roof. The barn faces east towards the farmhouse and features a large central doorway flanked by short projecting midstrey walls. It retains its original 16th-century oak shoulder-headed doorframe, while a smaller door in the rear wall dates from the 19th century. The barn's roof is gable-ended on the right and half-hipped on the left.

The stable, which is attached to the left (south) side of the barn and has a lower roof, includes a 19th-century door at the left end and a hayloft loading hatch at the right end above a section of rubble blocking. The stable's roof is hipped to the left. Inside the barn, there is an open space that extends to a 5-bay roof supported by 17th-century A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars, resting on a wall plate. The cob crosswall between the barn and stable has been removed.

The toilet area is supported by two crossbeams of substantial size, which are finished with soffit chamfers and pyramid stops, indicating a level of craftsmanship that is somewhat unexpected for a building primarily used for agricultural purposes. The roof appears to have been rebuilt in the 18th century, reusing old timbers, and in some areas, it is very crudely constructed. The barn is part of an attractive farmyard group that includes a nearby linhay and farmhouse.
