Description
The Hemyock War Memorial is located at the roadside, approximately 30 meters southeast of the Church of St Mary, which is listed at Grade II*. It is also near several churchyard monuments and the churchyard gates and gate piers, all of which are Grade II-listed. The memorial features a tall granite wheel-head cross that stands on a tapering plinth, which is raised on a square base. The front face of the cross-head and shaft is decorated with carved interlace patterns, including an intricate knot-work design at the front of the splayed cross shaft foot.
A cast bronze plaque on the front face of the plinth bears the main dedicatory inscription, which reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL AND AFFECTIONATE MEMORY OF (20 NAMES) WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919 'LEST WE FORGET'." Additionally, a smaller bronze plaque on the front face of the base states: "THESE GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE 1939-45 WAR (4 NAMES)," and to the left of this plaque is a small metal tablet that reads "(NAME) MALAYA 1956."
