Description
Three adjoining barns, dating from the 16th century and extended in the late 17th to early 18th century, are located approximately 5 meters south-east of Westwood Farmhouse. The barns are constructed of plastered cob on a high rubble footing and feature a corrugated iron roof, which was formerly thatch. The long range of barns faces north-east and is two storeys high throughout. It includes a small 16th-century barn at the right (north-west) end, a large central barn, and a small left barn, both of which are from the late 17th to early 18th century.
At the front right end, there is a 19th-century cartshed with a lean-to roof. To the left, a large 16th-century oak shoulder-headed door is complemented by a 20th-century hayloft loading bay above. The other barns feature large doors, with the central barn having a ventilator to the right. The right-hand barn has a two-bay roof supported by a 16th-century oak truss with massive scantling, featuring a true cruck principal at the front and an ordinary principal at the rear, along with a pegged lap-jointed collar and some original trenched purlins. Additionally, there is an axial beam to the hayloft of massive scantling. The other barns have A-frame trusses with pegged lap-jointed collars, with five bays in the centre barn and three bays in the left barn.
