Description
A large complex of farmbuildings dating to around 1850, constructed largely of roughly coursed volcanic stone with large dressed quoins, and some brick, with slate roofs. The buildings form four ranges around a courtyard. The east range, which adjoins Uton Barton Farmhouse, originally housed stables with haylofts above, accessed by loading bays. Later alterations included the insertion of a large sliding door and a smaller central door in the 20th century. This range has a 13-bay roof.
The north range features a large, central, gable-ended barn over a shippon, with flanking granary and linhays. The shippon basement is built of snecked volcanic stone and has a front arcade of five round-headed brick arches. Above the shippon is a brick barn, also of five bays, with two large doorways with segmental arches, alternating with three large unglazed mullion-and-transom windows fitted with vertical iron bars and shutters, all under segmental brick arches. A 7-bay roof covers this section. The granary, built in a matching style, has two ground-floor round-headed arches to the right of a granite staircase with iron railings leading to the granary door. A hayloft loading door and a small window are situated to the right. A granite drinking trough sits beneath the staircase and against the barn wall.
A linhay, of Alcock’s Type T1 extending 4½ bays, connects to the east range stables. Another 4-bay linhay continues from the barn to the west range, which is followed by a 9-bay linhay and a small stable or cowshed with hayloft above, adjoining the south range. The south range, facing away from the courtyard, incorporates a cartshed with hayloft and a two-storey, 5-window workshop and store block attached to Uton Barton Farmhouse. This is a well-preserved, large mid-19th century planned courtyard of contemporary farm buildings.
