Description

This is a row of four terraced houses located on Longbrook Street, likely built around 1845 to 1855. They are constructed of red brick with slate roofs, and Nos. 53 and 57 retain ornate red ridge tiles. The houses possess axial chimney stacks, with those of Nos. 53 and 55 retaining some original chimney pots. Cast iron rainwater goods are also present.

The houses have a deep, rectangular plan, one room wide, with front entrances on the left side leading to a staircase positioned behind. The rooms are heated by stacks located to the right.

Each house is three storeys high and features a two-window front. They have deep boxed eaves supported by paired brackets and a continuous platband at both the first and second floor levels. Doorcases with projecting cornices supported on consoles are found at Nos. 51 and 53. Nos. 55 and 57 have gabled porches with panelled reveals and an overlight above the door. The front doors each have six fielded panels. To the right of each door is a 12-pane hornless sash window. The first floor windows are 6/9 pane hornless sashes, while the second-floor windows are 3/6 pane hornless sashes. No. 51 has a 20th-century front door and replacement windows above the ground floor.

A partial inspection of No. 53 revealed some original plaster cornices and internal doors. The owner reports that original black marble chimney pieces remain, though they have been painted over.

The terrace represents a complete mid-19th century example built within the Georgian architectural tradition.
