Description
No. 14 Lower North Street, formerly known as the Barnstaple Inn, is a building that dates from the late 18th century to the early 19th century. It is a three-storey structure with a five-window red brick front, featuring a dentil eaves cornice and gabled dormers. The entry has an elliptical arch, and the doorway, which is located at the first-floor level, has a hood supported by carved brackets. This doorway is accessed by a footbridge that branches off from Iron Bridge and is of a similar age. The building also displays a West of England Insurance plaque. The windows are sash style with glazing bars, and the roof is covered with slate. Although it was completely gutted by fire in 1970, the shell of the building remains. All the listed buildings on Lower North Street form a group.
