Description
This building is a linhay, likely dating from the late 17th century to early 18th century, with 20th-century alterations that include re-roofing. It is constructed of Heavitree stone, with brick end walls set on Heavitree stone footings, and features a slate roof. The linhay has a plan that consists of 7 bays, open-fronted to the west. The loft remains in the two northern bays only, as the roof has been replaced throughout.
The exterior is notable for its grand hexagonal piers made of coursed Heavitree stone, which stand on square chamfered bases and divide the bays. The re-roofing has raised the height of each pier, with some being extended using a course of brickwork and others with timber pads. The coursed brecchia stone of the rear wall is also used as quoins on the gable end walls. Measured drawings of the building by J R L Thorp from December 1977 are archived in the Exeter Archaeological Field Unit.
