Description

This is a staggered terrace of six houses built in the early 19th century. The construction is of solid walls, with Nos. 1, 3, and 4 originally stuccoed and painted, while the others have a painted render finish. They have slate roofs, with rendered chimney shafts featuring bands, some chimneys topped with round, tapering pots and others with louvred tops. Original cast iron rainwater goods are still present.

The houses were designed with a single room width, double depth, and include service blocks at the rear. Heating is provided by axial chimney stacks. Each house is two storeys high, with No. 6 also having a basement or cellar with an iron grille to the basement window. The fronts are asymmetrical but regular, with Nos. 1-3 being one window wide and Nos. 4-6 having two windows. Six-panel doors remain at Nos. 3, 4, and 6, each with a rectangular overlight featuring vertical glazing bars. Boxed sash windows with 16 panes are found at Nos. 2 and 3, and at the first floor of No. 1; the windows at Nos. 2 and 3 are hornless, while No. 1’s has a vertical glazing bar. No. 4 has 12-pane sash windows, and the first-floor window on the right has horns. The windows at No. 5 are sash windows without glazing bars, with the ground and first floors on the left having horns. No. 6 has hornless sash windows with 16 panes on the ground and first floors on the left, alongside a 20th-century two-light, top-hung casement on the first floor to the right. The interiors have not been inspected.

Nos. 1-6 Colleton Row contribute to a group of modest houses built during the first half of the 19th century, showcasing a mix of building quality in the area.
