Description
The Hawker chest tomb and railings, located approximately 750mm south of the nave of the Church of St Mary, is a Grade II listed structure dated 1727 in memory of James Hawker. It is made of beerstone ashlar and has a rectangular shape. The tomb rests on a moulded plinth and features a thick soffit-moulded lid. The sides of the tomb are panelled, with a heraldic cartouche on the south side situated between two panels. These panels are inscribed with Roman serif upper and lower case lettering; the left panel notes the death of James Hawker in 1727, while the right panel lists the deaths of some of his relatives. The chest tomb is surrounded by 19th-century wrought iron railings.
