Description
Schoolhouse Cottages is a former schoolhouse that has been converted into three adjoining cottages. The school was established in 1720 by Sir Thomas Putt. The building dates from the early 18th century but has undergone substantial alterations in the 20th century. It is constructed of flint rubble and features a slate roof, which is gabled with coping at the right end of the main range and concealed behind a parapet to the left. The rear left wing has a hipped roof, and there are axial and right end stacks on the main range.
The building is located adjacent to the churchyard and has an L-shaped plan, consisting of a single-depth main range with a rear left wing at right angles. The left block was originally the schoolmaster's house, while the right block served as the schoolroom. There are two entrances on the front of the building, which is two storeys high and has an asymmetrical six-window front with a parapet to the left of centre.
The left of centre entrance features a 19th-century panelled front door with glazed top panels, while the right of centre has a gabled stone porch, likely from the 20th century, with a half-glazed door. The ground floor includes four windows and a blocked window at the extreme right, with two- and three-light 20th-century transomed casements that have glazing bars. The first floor has five windows, also featuring two- and three-light 20th-century casements with glazing bars. The interior has not been inspected but may hold some interest.
