Description

SY 29 NW WIDWORTHY WIDWORTHY

4/148 Redeby chest tomb approximately 1 - metre south of tower of the Church of St Cuthbert GV II Chest tomb. Early C19 with main inscription illegible but it incorporates an earlier slab in memory of John Redeby (dated 1644). Beerstone ashlar. Chest tomb is rectangular in plan with soffit-moulded flat lid. Any plinth is buried. The south side contains a rectangular panel flanked by fluted bands with sunbursts carved in the top corners. The inscription here is inscribed in Gothic lettering but the name of the deceased and date of death are illegible. The west end appears to be a reset piece although the inscription fits. It is inscribed in Gothic lettering and records the death of John Redeby in 1644.
