Description
The Redeby chest tomb, located approximately 1 metre south of the tower of the Church of St Cuthbert, is an early 19th-century structure that incorporates an earlier slab commemorating John Redeby, dated 1644. Made of beerstone ashlar, the chest tomb has a rectangular shape and features a soffit-moulded flat lid. The plinth is buried. On the south side, there is a rectangular panel flanked by fluted bands, with sunbursts carved in the top corners. The inscription on this panel is in Gothic lettering, but the name of the deceased and the date of death are illegible. The west end of the tomb appears to be a reset piece, with an inscription in Gothic lettering that records the death of John Redeby in 1644.
