Description

This building is a barn and cider house located approximately 4 metres south-east of Poltimore Farmhouse. The main structure dates from the late 18th century to early 19th century, while the outbuildings are from the late 19th century. It is constructed from local stone and flint rubble, topped with a slate roof. The main block is situated on a gentle slope, facing into the farm courtyard to the north-north-west.

At the left (east) end, there is a barn that originally housed a threshing machine powered by a waterwheel located in the rear wall, which was fed by a leat. To the right is the cider house, which features an apple loft above it. The late 19th-century extension is at the right (west) end, built at an angle to the main block and facing north-east. This extension is lower and includes a former bull pen, pony stable, and gig shed, with a hayloft above.

The exterior of both blocks displays an irregular arrangement of doorways and unglazed windows, all featuring plain 19th-century joinery. The barn has large double doors at the left end, raised above ground level for easy loading and unloading from carts. The roof of the main block is hipped on the left and gable-ended on the right, stepping down from the barn to the cider house. The extension has a central hayloft loading hatch that rises into the eaves, with a gable roof. The main roof of the extension is gabled on the right and hipped on the left.

Inside, the building contains plain 19th-century carpentry details. This barn, cider house, and the associated outbuildings form a cohesive and attractive group of traditional farm structures linked to Poltimore Farmhouse, which is one of the oldest and best-preserved farmhouses in the area.
