Description
The Wheaton chest tomb, located approximately 3 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St Michael, is a Grade II listed structure dated 1805 in memory of William Wheaton. It is made of Beerstone ashlar and has a rectangular plan. The flat lid features moulded edges and the tomb rests on a moulded plinth.
On the south side, there are two panels with bead-moulded surrounds, each inscribed in Roman serif upper and lower case lettering, recording the deaths of William Wheaton, one in 1803 and the other in 1805. The north side displays an earlier slab of Beerstone, reused from an older tomb, flanked by two narrow panels. This slab is inscribed in Gothic lettering and commemorates Thomas Hendo, who died in 1610. It is believed that this refers to Thomas Haydon, known for the significant late 16th-century refurbishment of Poltimore Farmhouse.
