Description
The churchyard cross, located approximately 3 metres south of the chancel of the Church of St Gregory, is a Grade II listed structure. The lower part of the shaft likely dates from the 15th century, while the upper portion was restored in 1913 by Hems of Exeter. Made of granite, the plain Latin cross stands about 3 metres high, with chamfered edges. Only a section of approximately 750 mm in the gently tapering shaft is medieval. The socket stone sits atop three octagonal steps at the base, with the middle step featuring a biblical quotation inscribed in medieval-style lettering. This cross was restored in memory of A M Toplady, who was the author of the hymn "Rock of Ages" and served as the Vicar of Harpford and Venn Ottery from 1866 to 1868.
