Description

Otter House is an early 19th-century house located in Newton Poppleford. It is constructed of plastered stone rubble or brick, with brick stacks likely dating from the 19th century and a slate roof. The house faces west and features a double-depth plan with three rooms at the front and back. The entrance hall and staircase are positioned to the right of center, with a large axial stack between the center and left rooms.

The building has two storeys with attics and presents a regular but not symmetrical three-window front, most of which is original. The ground floor features three-light casement windows with glazing bars, including a top tier of pointed arches, while the outer first-floor windows are shorter and simpler, also with glazing bars. The doorway, located to the right of center, has a part-glazed panelled door, a narrow overlight, panelled reveals, and a doorcase adorned with Tuscan pilasters and a moulded entablature that includes a dentil cornice.

The plaster front is lightly scored to resemble ashlar, and above it, there are deep projecting eaves supported by widely spaced pairs of shaped brackets. The roof is notably tall, gable-ended on the right and half-hipped on the left, with a 20th-century skylight positioned left of center. The other windows include 19th and 20th-century casements, most with glazing bars, and one in the left end wall features leaded glass panes. The interior retains a significant amount of original detail.
