Description
This is a barn located approximately 35 metres east of Sutton Barton Farmhouse, likely built in the mid to late 16th century, with some 19th-century additions. The structure features exposed local stone and flint rubble, along with some Beerstone dressings, topped by a corrugated iron roof with some thatch underneath. The 19th-century granary extension is made of similar stone rubble with brick dressings and has a slate roof.
The barn is positioned across a hillslope, facing east, and is a large threshing barn with opposing full-height doorways leading to the threshing floor, which is slightly south of the center. A 19th-century granary extends at a right angle to the rear and overlaps the left end of the barn. There are also other secondary outshots at the rear.
On the exterior, the large front doorway is a plain opening. To the left, there are two hayloft loading hatches, while there were likely two to the right; however, the end one has been enlarged into another doorway. The roof is hipped on the left side and gable-ended on the right, featuring shaped kneelers and coping. A narrow Beerstone ventilator is present at the gable end. The rear doorway is flanked by buttresses with weathered offsets, and the granary has an external staircase.
Inside, the threshing floor is bordered by stone rubble and cob partitions, which are likely from the 17th century, as they are supported by two chamfered and scroll-stopped beams. The southern section has a hayloft above, supported by roughly chamfered crossbeams, while the northern section remains open to the roof. The original roof consists of eight bays, supported by side-pegged jointed cruck trusses with cranked collars and three sets of through purlins. Despite its poor condition, this barn is a fine and unusually large example from the 16th century.
