Description
A coach house and stables, likely dating from the late 18th or early 19th century, possibly incorporating elements of an earlier structure such as a church house or cottages. The building is constructed of local stone rubble with brick dressings; the front elevation is entirely brick in a Flemish bond pattern with some burnt headers, laid upon low stone rubble footings. It has a slate roof, possibly originally thatched.
The plan comprises a large coach house and stable block. The building sits close to the north-east corner of the churchyard, backing onto it, and faces west onto a cobbled stable yard. Large coach house doorways with segmental arch heads are located at each end, each containing double doors. A stable block projects slightly forward from the main block; haylofts are situated above.
The central section of the front (the stables) breaks forward. The symmetrical 2-window front of the stable block is centered around a doorway. This doorway has a pointed arch head, a 2-flap door, and an overlight with Y-tracery glazing bars in a pattern of leaded glass panes. Pointed arch-headed windows flank the doorway, housing original Y-tracery glazing bars, although the glass has been replaced. Arch-headed windows on the first floor have no glazing bars and are each topped with a gable. The main roof is hipped at each end and curves forward over the projecting section. A hayloft loading hatch is set into the north end wall, rising to the eaves with a curved "eyebrow" roof. An original window with a pointed arch head, Y-tracery glazing bars, and leaded glass is located in the south end wall, overlooking the churchyard.
The interior has not been inspected. The coach house and stable block is likely contemporaneous with Cotleigh House. The building's position relative to the churchyard suggests it may occupy the site of a former church house or cottages, although there is no conclusive evidence to confirm an earlier building in the stonework.
