Description

Clysthayes is a house that likely dates from the 18th century or early 19th century. It has a colourwashed and rendered exterior, which is probably built of stone, with the right end wall made of brick on stone footings and rusticated quoins. The roof is thatched with a plain ridge and hipped ends. There is an axial stack to the right of the center, a rear left lateral stack that is probably from the 20th century, and an end stack to the rear right wing.

The building has an L-shaped plan, with the main range facing south and presumably consisting of two rooms (the interior has not been inspected). The entrance is located on the front to the right of the center. The exterior features two storeys and an asymmetrical front with four windows that have regular spacing. There is a 19th-century panelled front door to the right of the center, which is sheltered by a round-headed porch with trellis work at the top, although the sides have been replaced with planks. Above the front door, there is a keyblock inscribed with "Ma foy a Dieu/Mon foyer a mes amis".

On the ground floor, there are three 20th-century timber casements with small panes, arranged as two-light windows. The first floor has four 20th-century three-light casements. Based on interruptions to the stone plinth, it appears that the ground floor windows may have originally been bays or bows. The interior is said to be plain but has not been inspected. Clysthayes is situated at the west end of an exceptional village known for its traditional thatched houses.
