Description
This is a barn located approximately 1 metre south-west of Ashtree Farmhouse, dating from the 18th century and refurbished in the late 19th century. The barn is constructed of cob on stone rubble footings, with extensive patches of stone rubble and late 19th-century brick, topped with a thatched roof. It faces east and features large opposing doors on the long walls that lead to the threshing floor. The front has a full-height doorway slightly right of centre, with double doors split into two flaps, made of planks with cover strips. Much of the wall is faced with local flint rubble, and the corners and doorway are accented with brick quoins. The roof is hipped at both ends. The left (southern) end wall is faced with brick and includes a loading hatch. The rear doorway is smaller than the front and has similar doors. Inside, the barn is open from the ground to a four-bay roof supported by 18th-century A-frame trusses, featuring spiked lap-jointed collars and X-apexes. This barn is a rare example of a farm building that still has a thatched roof.
