Description

The lychgate and adjoining boundary walls on the east side of the churchyard date from the late 19th century. The lychgate is constructed from red conglomerate ashlar with Bathstone corbels and features an oak frame. Its roof is covered with scallop-shaped red tiles and has red crested and pierced ridge tiles. The adjoining walls are made of random rubble Torquay limestone, topped with red conglomerate ashlar coping and quoins.

The lychgate has a gable-ended roof supported by four stone corner posts, which are connected by low walls with open framing above. It includes double gates and is flanked by low boundary walls of the churchyard, with a kissing gate on the right side.

Both the front and rear faces of the lychgate feature ashlar corner posts with a chamfered plinth, topped with pairs of fluted Bathstone corbels. The end trusses are arch-braced, and above the collar is an open quatrefoil that contains a plaque with a carved fleur-de-lys. The collar bears the inscription 'sic vas non vobis'. The sides of the lychgate have square-headed windows with Gothic tracery, featuring two-light windows beside a lancet. The underside of the two-bay roof is boarded and has a central simple A-frame truss. The gates are panelled below the lock-bar and open above, with strap hinges bolted on. The kissing gate is designed similarly.
