FARRINGDON FARRINGDON Church Cottage

GV II

House. Mid C17, refurbished in early C18. Plastered cob on rubble footings; stone rubble or brick stacks topped with C20 brick; slate roof (probably thatch originally). 2-room plan house facing north-west with central through-passage also containing the stair. Kitchen to left (north-east) with end stack and parlour to right with projecting end stack. 2 storeys. Secondary outshot to rear of kitchen. Symmetrical 3-window front of probably C19 3-light flat-faced mullion casements with glazing bars. Central doorway contains an early C18 6-panel door (the top panel now glazed) in a contemporary bead-moulded frame. Roof is gable-ended. Interior: both rooms have original soffit-chamfered and scroll-stopped crossbeams. The kitchen fireplace is blocked and, according to the occupier, its oak lintel was cut through circa 1980. The parlour was refurbished in early C18. The fireplace has a brick segmental arch over and curving brick pentan. There is a 2-fielded panel door from the passage to the parlour and the flat back faces of each panel have charmingly romantic C19 paintings; an Alpine landscape above and bullrushes with flowers below. The roof is inaccessible but the bases of the truss principals show suggesting that the original A-frame trusses survive.
