Description
Church Cottage is a house dating from the mid-17th century, refurbished in the early 18th century. It is constructed of plastered cob on rubble footings, with stone rubble or brick stacks topped with 20th-century brick, and a slate roof that was likely originally thatch. The house has a two-room plan facing northwest, with a central through-passage that also contains the stair. The kitchen is located to the left (northeast) with an end stack, while the parlour is to the right with a projecting end stack. The building is two storeys high and features a secondary outshot at the rear of the kitchen.
The front of the house is symmetrical with three windows, which are probably 19th-century three-light flat-faced mullion casements with glazing bars. The central doorway has an early 18th-century six-panel door, with the top panel now glazed, set in a contemporary bead-moulded frame. The roof is gable-ended.
Inside, both rooms retain original soffit-chamfered and scroll-stopped crossbeams. The kitchen fireplace is blocked, and according to the occupier, its oak lintel was cut through around 1980. The parlour was refurbished in the early 18th century, featuring a fireplace with a brick segmental arch and a curving brick pentan. There is a two-fielded panel door from the passage to the parlour, with charming 19th-century paintings on the flat back faces of each panel, depicting an Alpine landscape above and bullrushes with flowers below. Although the roof is inaccessible, the bases of the truss principals suggest that the original A-frame trusses still exist.
