Description

House. It likely dates from the early 17th century, with a chimney dated 1625, and includes a later block probably from 1854 (indicated by a datestone). Significant alterations were made in the late 1950s, which involved introducing woodwork of various dates sourced from other locations. The construction is rendered, likely using stone and cob, with a two-span slate roof and gabled ends. The stacks have rendered shafts. The original layout was probably a double-depth plan, with the rear block potentially originating as a three-room and through-passage plan, possibly missing a room from the west end. A two-room-wide front block was added around 1854.

The south front, facing south, has two bays, with a likely 19th-century porch on posts and a 20th-century two-leaf front door, along with 1950s windows. The return side of the rear block features three 17th-century windows with ovolo-moulded stone mullions. Other elevations display a variety of 20th-century windows, including several 1950s windows with stone mullions.

The interior presents a challenge in distinguishing original features from those imported. Original elements in the rear block include a section of decorated plasterwork on the first-floor wall of the rear left-hand room, a moulded stone chimney-piece with a Tudor arch in the first-floor room to the right, and a jointed cruck roof construction. The house incorporates a good 17th-century dog-leg staircase with turned balusters, numerous pieces of woodwork from the 16th, 17th, and 19th centuries, a fine 1840s marble Gothic chimney-piece (said to have originated from Upottery House) in the front left room, and fragments and panels of 19th-century stained glass.
