Description
Cadenham Manor is a house that appears to date from the late 17th century, but it may incorporate parts of the earlier manor house of the Hungerford family, which was located on a moated site nearby. The building was restored and extended around 1920 to 1930. It is constructed of ashlar stone and features stone slate roofs. The house has two storeys and an attic, designed in an E-plan layout.
The main east front has a five-window range and a hipped roof, with two large ashlar ridge stacks that have panelled fronts, moulded bases, and cornices. It has a raised plinth and a coved eaves cornice. There are four-light mullion and transom windows on each side, with hoodmoulds over the ground floor windows. The central bay features a frontispiece typical of around 1700, with bolection moulded doorways on each floor set against a channelled rusticated frame that includes carved motifs at the upper angles and moulded cornices above. These motifs and the Hungerford family crests are notable features. French windows are present on each floor, with an upper wrought iron balcony.
The north front has a two-window range with similar three-light mullion windows, a west coped gable, and an end stack. The lower west wing appears to be entirely from the 20th century. The south front features a 20th-century gable on the right and, on the left, a two-window range of 20th-century mullion windows, along with two hipped dormers, a coped west gable, and a west stack. The wings enclose an east entrance court, which is mostly of 20th-century origin, except for the rear of the main range and part of the north side. The main range has a large 20th-century gabled centre projection and leaded timber-mullion windows on each side. The interior has not been inspected.
Cadenham was a significant estate of the Hungerford family from the 15th century until 1712. Edward Hungerford purchased it in 1468, and John Evelyn visited in 1654, although John Aubrey described it as ruinous in the 1670s. The crests on the porch are associated with Sir George Hungerford, who died in 1712 and likely built the current house.
