Description
The orangery with a walled garden at Longleat House was built around 1807 by Jeffrey Wyatville for the 2nd Marquess of Bath. It features limestone ashlar and a Welsh slate hipped roof. The structure is a single storey with seven large glazed bays; the central bay has French windows leading up steps, flanked by narrow bays with Doric pilasters and an entablature, topped with a blocking course that has balustraded panels. The returns have three large glazed bays with a central set of French windows leading up stone steps, and there is scrolled decoration on the blocking course.
The rear of the orangery is constructed from Flemish bond brick and includes a central octagonal porch with French windows, also leading up stone steps. Inside, there is a flagstone floor and a coved plaster ceiling. The rear porch features a trellised partition with round-arched openings. Notable fittings include two large stone urns on pedestals and square slate boxes for orange trees, as well as a bolection-moulded tablet with a plaster relief of a classical scene on the rear wall. The garden walls attached to the rear enclose a rectangular garden made of coursed rubble stone with ashlar coping, and the openings have studded or planked doors. This orangery is part of Wyatville's additions and improvements to the buildings in the park, with Humphry Repton also contributing to the design and siting of these structures within the landscape.
