Description
Spye Arch Lodge is a gate lodge to Spye Park, originally the gatehouse of Bromham House, dating from the 16th century and slightly altered in the late 18th century. It is constructed of ashlar stone with a stone slate roof. The building stands two storeys high and features a battlemented parapet, a high plinth, and angle buttresses.
The lodge has a large four-centred arch with a hoodmould and carved arms in the spandrels, along with a later inserted round arch. Flanking the entrance are 18th-century Gothick ogee-headed niches made of ashlar. The first floor showcases a fine 1:3:1-light mullion-and-transom oriel window, which has Tudor-arched heads for the upper lights, a moulded cornice, and a parapet. The deep carved apron below the oriel displays the arms of Henry VIII, flanked by intricately carved panels. The moulded base of the oriel also features fine carving, and there are two finials on the oriel and two similar ones on the parapet on either side.
The central battlement is adorned with a carved griffin head, while each outer battlement has a donkey's head. The rear of the lodge is similar in style but slightly simplified, lacking the transom on the oriel and the finials. The fine carving is also evident in the apron panels and arch spandrels. The sides of the building are made of rubble stone and include a pair of 18th-century Gothick lancet lights with heavy projecting surrounds on the first floor, along with doors on the ground floor.
