Description

This listing describes a row of five chest tombs located approximately 6 meters southeast of the Church of St Andrew in Chippenham. The tombs are positioned near the southeast corner of the chancel and feature plinths, cyma-moulded flat tops, and ogee-based shields, with one shield at each end and two on the sides.

The first tomb, dating from the 18th century, is located about 3 meters from the corner and has shields that are highlighted by pilasters with raised and field panels. The second tomb, approximately 6 meters from the corner, is from the 17th century and features shields supported by engaged Tuscan columns. The third tomb, also about 6 meters from the corner and from the 18th century, has shields articulated by pilasters with scrolled foliate carving. The fourth tomb, located about 10 meters from the corner and dating from the 18th century, is similar to the third. The fifth tomb, approximately 12 meters from the corner and also from the 18th century, shares similarities with the third tomb. The inscriptions on all the tombs have become eroded over time.
