Twelve Chest tombs. Limestone. Mid C18-early C19. Grouped in 3 parallel rows of 3, 4 and 4 with one (1) isolated next to path. Lettering sequence from north to south down each row beginning with row furthest east. a) Unidentified. Late C18 with oval and lozenge panels to sides, willow sprays surrounding shields to ends. Coved cornice to slab. b) Unidentified. Early C19 with cusped-panelled pilasters framing square panels to sides and shields to ends. Bracketed cornice to slab. c) James Darley/Architect and Builder and his family. 1821. Plain chest with 3 slightly recessed panels to each side, those to south with incised lettering. Coved slab. Darley was Clerk of the Works at nearby Charlton House during the 1772-6 alterations there. (H.M. Colvin, Biographical Dictionary of British Architects, 1978) d) Unidentified. Mid C18 with corner balusters, floral swagged pilasters framing projecting raised and fielded panels to each side, moulded plinth and gadrooned edge to slab. e) Unidentified. Late C18 with corner balusters, floral sprays framing raised and fielded panels to either side and deeply projecting cyma recta moulded slab. f) Lawrence Chandler. 1810 with urns set in shallow relief to each side framing inscription panels. g) Lawrence family. Earliest date 1795. Fluted pilasters, raised and fielded panels to north side, 2 circular panels to south; incised lettering. End panels moulded to simulate balusters with bell flower decoration. Moulded plinth, coved cornice and coved slab. h) Unidentified. Late C18 with ringed daisy drops to angle pilasters, tied-back drapery decoration to sides and lozenges to end panels. Moulded plinth, complex moulded cornice and cyma recta moulded slab. i) Unidentified. Late C18 with corner balusters, raised and fielded panels to either side, moulded plinth and cyma recta moulded slab badly weathered. j) Unidentified. Late C18 with panelled corner pilasters and central pilaster forming 2 raised and fielded panels to north side and oval panel to south. Moulded plinth, pulvinated frieze and plain slab. k) Unidentified. Late C18 with corner balusters, floral pilasters, south inscription panel with drapery and winged putti and bead and reel moulding below pulvinated frieze to cornice. Coved slab. 1) Unidentified. Early C19. Conceived as a single geometric shape with bowed ends, raised and fielded panels to either side, moulded plinth and cyma recta moulded slab.
