Seven Monuments In The Churchyard Between 0.5 Metres And 6 Metres North Of Nave Of Church Of St George

There are seven chest tombs located in the churchyard, between 0.5 metres and 6 metres north of the nave of the Church of St George. These tombs date from the late 17th century and 18th century and are made of limestone.

The group of three tombs to the north belongs to members of the Matravers family. The northernmost tomb features oval egg and dart moulded panels and quarter balusters on a fluted frieze, with an inscription for Elizabeth who died in 1788. The next tomb to the south has a floral bordered oval panel with floral drops at the corners, a moulded cornice, and an inscription for James who died in 1753. The easternmost of the three has shield-shaped panels, quarter balusters, and a fluted frieze; all three tombs have weathered tops.

To the south, there is a low tomb with two panels featuring cartouches, an egg-moulded flat top, and an illegible inscription. Another 18th-century tomb further south has plain panels, corner pilasters, a pulvinated frieze, and a flat top. A pair of tombs joined together at the east end of the north side of the nave have two recessed moulded panels, with a skull and hourglass carved on the west end panels, and ogee moulded flat tops. The date 1699 is legible on the west panel of the southern tomb.
