Description

The Old House is a detached house dating to circa 1700. It is constructed of Flemish bond brick with stone dressings, featuring chamfered quoins and a stone slate hipped roof with brick stacks. The house is arranged in an L-plan, with a later wing added to the rear right. It is two storeys and has an attic, with a three-window facade. The central entrance has a C20 double door within a bolection-moulded architrave, topped with a broken pediment and urn. Flanking the door are three-light, cyma-moulded, mullioned and transomed casement windows. A moulded string course runs along the facade, and the first floor has a four-pane sash window in a moulded architrave above the door, with matching three-light, mullioned and transomed casement windows to either side, and a moulded stone eaves cornice. Three hipped attic dormers each contain a two-light casement window. The left return has a C20 oculus to the first floor, and a C19 wing is present. The rear of the house has a contemporary wing to the left, featuring a C19 door with a canopy, mullioned and transomed casements, and a flat-roofed addition filling the gap between the wings. The interior retains several original features, including a dog-leg staircase with turned balusters on a closed string, a wide, moulded handrail with square newels, and a retained moulded cross window integrated into a former external wall behind the stairs. The ceilings include chamfered cross beams with ogee stops. A fireplace with a timber lintel on brick jambs is present in the room to the left of the entrance, and another fireplace with a curved brick back is in the room on the right. Original good quality six-panel doors are fitted with H-L hinges.
