Description

The Prince of Orange Statue is a Grade II listed white marble statue situated on a granite pedestal and plinth in Lower Brixham. It was created by W & T Wills of London between 1888 and 1889. The statue depicts William, Prince of Orange, with his right foot forward, left hand on his chest, and right hand holding a large feathered hat. He is dressed in a heavy overcoat and thigh boots. The plinth features two steps, while the pedestal has a moulded cap and base.

On the southwest face of the pedestal, there is an incised inscription that reads: "WILLIAM PRINCE OF ORANGE, AFTERWARDS WILLIAM III, KING OF GREAT BRITAIN & IRELAND, LANDED NEAR THIS SPOT 5TH NOVEMBER 1688 AND ISSUED HIS FAMOUS DECLARATION 'THE LIBERTIES OF ENGLAND AND THE PROTESTANT RELIGION I WILL MAINTAIN'." Beneath this inscription is the name of the sculptor. The southeast face bears the inscription: "ERECTED BY PUBLIC SUBSCRIPTION AND DEDICATED TO THE TOWN OF BRIXHAM. FOUNDATION STONE LAID 5TH NOVBR 1888, BY HIS EXCELLENCY COUNT DE BYLANDT. UNVEILED 5TH NOVEMBER 1889." The northwest face features the inscription: "ENGELANDS VRIJHEID DOOR ORANJE HERSTELD." Historical photographs indicate that the land where the statue stands originally extended into the harbour and was enclosed by an iron railing.
