Description

This is a house, originally one dwelling, later divided into two cottages, likely dating from the mid-17th century or earlier. It is located on Old Torquay Road, Paignton. The external walls are rendered, and the roof is thatched, with a hipped design at the ends. A prominent front stack, projecting from the side, is constructed of roughcast with paired pots and toothed cresting. The main section of the house is a single depth, with two rooms across the front. It now has doorways on the left and right, leading to the stairs. Later rear extensions have been added, and are not thatched.

The front elevation has an almost symmetrical appearance with three bays on one side and one on the other, and initially had windows in each position. There is a recessed C20 entrance door on each side. The ground floor now has C20 small-pane bow windows in the centre. Four first-floor windows are timber 3-light casements with small panes of glass. A window on the right return of number 34 is a probably early 19th century two-light casement with glazing bars.

The interior of number 32 has been modernised. Number 34 is said to retain early exposed carpentry, although access was not possible during the survey. The house is part of a group of vernacular houses that predate the 19th century in Preston.
