Description

The courtyard arch and screen walls at the west end of the courtyard of Oldway Mansion were built between 1904 and 1907, during the remodelling of the house for Paris Singer. The structure features a triumphal arch that is stuccoed, possibly over concrete. It has a massive round-headed archway with pilasters and a moulded design, topped with a deep projecting cornice and a triglyph frieze adorned with patterae. A carved or moulded lion's mask with lionskin swags hangs over the archway. The arch is flanked by pilasters that exhibit chanelled rustication. The tall screen walls, which have balustraded parapets, are decorated with plain rectangular panels on the courtyard side and feature additional oculi with plain, proud frames on the west side. This entrance serves as a spectacular feature for the mansion, adding to its theatrical character.
