Description
The Church of St James, built in 1864 by W. Pedley, is an example of Early English architecture. It features rubble construction on a moulded plinth and a stone slate roof. The church has a three-stage tower made of ashlar, with an arcaded upper stage and angle buttresses. The nave consists of four bays and includes a gabled porch facing the south avenue that leads to the gates of Warnford Place. The chancel has two bays. Inside, the church is finished with ashlar and has truss rafter roofs. The windows are supported by en delit purbeck shafts, with a triplet at the east end. The interior also features fleur de lys tiles, a chancel arch supported by angel corbels, and a font. Additionally, there is a small earlier portable marble font in a turned baluster shape, which bears the Warnford/Banbury arms and has a turned wood cover. Notably, the author Ian Fleming is buried in the churchyard.
