Description
The Two Barrage Balloon Workshops in Pucklechurch were built around 1938 as part of Balloon Centre No.11, which was established to defend Bristol, Filton, and Avonmouth during the Second World War. These workshops feature a steel frame clad in asbestos sheets, although some of the cladding has been replaced. The buildings have a mansard-shaped asbestos-clad roof with gabled ends for the main balloon sheds, and a lower corrugated asbestos roof with gabled ends for the workshops.
The layout consists of a pair of rectangular workshops, each with a large balloon shed that is open to the roof and a lower two-storey workshop at one end. The large balloon sheds are clad in asbestos and have mansard-like roofs with large windows high in the walls on three sides. The lower workshops are finished with horizontal timber boards and include multi-pane steel-frame windows and dormers.
Inside, the balloon sheds are lined with asbestos sheets and open to the roof, while the lower workshops feature exposed steel braced roof trusses and are partly floored. These workshops were used for repairing barrage balloons that were damaged in combat or had broken loose from their moorings. They are one of the last two remaining examples of the original four balloon workshops at the Pucklechurch depot, highlighting their significance in Britain's military architecture during the Second World War.
