Description

Portcullis Cottage is a pair of houses that have been combined into one. It is dated "IM 1811" but has a character typical of the mid-18th century, with some additions and alterations from the mid to late 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed rubblestone with ashlar dressings. The front roof is covered with Cotswold stone slates, while the rear and the addition have double-roman clay tiles. The cottage has two storeys with an attic and features two bays, along with a rear outshut and an added rear wing, which is not of special interest.

The building has quoins and paired doorways at the center; the left doorway is set in a 20th-century trellised porch, while the right doorway has been converted into a window. All windows are of two lights with leaded casements, and the original windows feature chamfered mullions and surrounds, complete with dripstones. A raised lozenge datestone is located at the center of the first floor. The gables have shaped kneelers, coping, and corniced stacks. At the rear, there is a catslide roof over the outshut. Each side has an original attic window with a dripstone and an inserted window in the outshut, with quoins at the rear angle indicating that the outshut was originally lower.

Inside, the cottage features three wooden winder staircases, elm floorboards, and original roof timbers.
