Description
The Falfield War Memorial is a First World War memorial erected in 1921 to honor the men of the parish who lost their lives while serving their country during the First World War, and later also those who died in the Second World War.
The memorial stands approximately 2.7 meters tall and is made of stone, designed in the shape of a calvary cross atop an octagonal column. This column rests on a square base, which features bronze plaques on each of its four sides, and is set on a three-stepped octagonal base. The memorial is situated on a raised, horseshoe-shaped platform paved with stone slabs, surrounded by a low curved stone wall at the back, and includes three decorative bollards that hold a cast iron chain at the front.
Each of the four bronze plaques is inscribed. The front plaque, which likely replaced an earlier plaque that only mentioned the First World War, reads:
IN MEMORY OF THOSE BRAVE / MEN OF FALFIELD WHO, / IN THE GREAT WARS OF / 1914-1918 and 1939-1945, / FELL IN THEIR COUNTRY'S CAUSE.
The other three plaques list the names of the fallen, with the first plaque commemorating seven names from 1914-1918, the second plaque commemorating six names from 1914-1918, and the third plaque commemorating four names from 1939-1945.
