Description
The Upton Cheyney War Memorial Shelter is a First World War memorial with later dedication plaques. It features stone walls supported by timber and has a tile roof. The shelter is located on the south-east side of the road and is accessed by a short flight of steps, which are flanked by low stone walls. The structure is supported by chamfer-and-stop stone uprights and has a pitched king-post roof. A large central stone tablet is set into the rear wall, with an inscription in black lettering that reads: ‘1914-1918/ UPTON CHEYNEY, BEACH/ AND GOLDEN VALLEY SENT/ 55 MEN TO THE GREAT WAR/ OF WHOM 7 GAVE THEIR LIVES’. Above this tablet, there are two later metal plaques with raised lettering. The shelter is enclosed within a stone wall.
