Description
The dockyard wall, built between 1830 and 1831 by Sir John Rennie Jnr for the Victualling Board, is located at the Royal William Victualling Yard in Plymouth. Constructed from granite ashlar and limestone rubble, the wall extends approximately 300 meters, with about 120 meters running southeast and a return of approximately 150 meters. The wall features a channelled rusticated granite section that stretches for about 10 meters southeast from the Main Gate, transitioning to rubble with a lacing course that meets the Rear Retaining Wall at the southeast corner of the site. This imposing perimeter wall, which includes a single landward Main Gate, was designed to prevent theft and loss of supplies. It is part of a significant group with the Main Gate and contributes to the Royal William Victualling Yard's status as one of the most remarkable and complete early 19th-century industrial complexes in the country, showcasing a unique example of Neo-Classical planning for a state manufacturing site.
